ARUCAS: HISTORY, ART AND RUM

Arucas is a fascinating city famous for its large church of St John the Baptist, built from local volcanic stone called ''azul stone". The historical centre retains a traditional atmosphere, while the Arehucas Distillery and some panoramic terraces offer culture and entertainment.


The Cathedral of St John the Baptist

Although often called ''cathedral'', is in actually a church parish. It is famous for its neo-Gothic architecture and the dark stone used in the construction.

  • Handmade by local craftsmen. Work lasted more than 70 years, starting in 1909.
  • Inside are large stained glass windows that create an evocative atmosphere.

🥃 The Arehucas Distillery

This is where the Gran Canaria's most famous rum. Founded in 1884, the distillery is still active and you can visit to see how rum is made and taste different varieties.

  • It is one of the oldest distilleries in Spain.
  • It keeps over 4,000 oak barrels, some signed by celebrities.
  • It offers guided tours with tasting.

By car: only 15 minutes from Las Palmas via the GC-2 and GC-20.
By bus: lines 205 e 206 connect Arucas to Las Palmas.
